No Greater Love

Madonna and Child.
(Burgundy, France 1380-1439)

This week is observed by Christians around the World as Holy Week where we reflect on the Passion of Jesus Christ. During our visit to The Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York City last year, we visited one of their galleries called the Medieval Art Galleries. One of the galleries evoked a European church with massive ceiling heights, Gothic arches and a huge Spanish Choir screen, in the picture above, from a Valladolid Cathedral built in 1763. In the centre of the gallery is the Madonna and Child sculpted in Burgundy, France around 1380-1439.  There are several other religious icons and paintings displayed all around it.  During this Holy Week, we ask, where does love start? There is no greater love than the first bonding of a Mother and her child. As there is giving life, there is also death which we reflect on the Passion of Jesus Christ during this Holy Week.

Greater love has no one than this,
that one lay down his life for his friends.

  4. Oh how I love the Met!! My favorite Pieta is the one at St. Peter's Basilica by Michelangelo - it makes me weep and I am not even particularly religious!

Have a beautiful day, Pamela! xoxo

  10. On an emotional level, such a contrast between the adoring Madonna looking at her infant and the grieving mother caring for the body of her son.
