David Bowie Is So Cool

The Art Gallery of Ontario is currently showing the first stop of the David Bowie Is Exhibit here in North America. This Exhibit was originally presented and curated by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London last Spring and is currently on tour here in North America with Toronto as the first stop. I was lucky enough to attend the first weekend showing last weekend which was easily sold out. No photos were allowed during the Exhibition but I had so much fun learning about David Bowie, his life, career, music, his art and fashion. He is a multi-talented man, a pioneer in music, so ahead of his time, super stylish and definitely an original. Imagine his career spanned from 1970s to the present. During the 1970s, he was already into space odyssey suits, he was into psychedelic fashion and music. He collaborated with artists like Pierre Laroche, Kansai Yamamoto and even Alexander McQueen even before they became well known in their own fields. On display were over 300 objects from his own archives including his costumes, handwritten lyrics, books and works of Art. Bowie's costumes were even more outrageous and more fantastic than Lady Gaga. David Bowie has transformed himself into many forms that could rival Madonna's transformation in the music world. This exhibit is the coolest exhibit I have ever seen. It combined David Bowie's music, art and fashion into one. David Bowie is definitely so cool!
Tokyo Pop Bodysuit for the Aladdin Sane tour designed by Kansai Yamamoto, 1973.
David Bowie is ahead of his time and collaborated with talented artists even before they become popular in the mainstream Fashion. The Union Jack coat was designed by Alexander McQueen in collaboration with David Bowie when McQueen was still a student at Central Saint Martins, London. The Suit was worn by David Bowie from the Life on Mars? video in 1973.
Bowie wrote the lyrics to Ziggy Stardust.
The Flash was designed by Celia Phio and Brian Duffy and drawn by make-up artist Pierre Laroche.
These are some of the David Bowie goodies sold at the the AGO Gift Shop.
C'mon  Let's Dance to David Bowie.

David Bowie is at Holt Renfrew window display.

The clever thing was to break the rules and
 stay alive all the same.

  10. This is something I would really like to see. Not many persons has that much charisma, regardless are u a fan or not. David Bowie, Nick Cave, Freddie Mercury, Leonard Cohen, just some of my favorites, not similar at all, but I think the common thing that connects them is that unique, peculiar expression. I think I m a little bit jealous;-) Have a beautiful Sunday!:)

  13. Oh wow, this looks like such a cool exhibit! Why do I not live in Toronto? There's so much more culture there. I was never a fan of music but I think it's so awesome that he collaborated with McQueen!

  19. Just catching up on your blog after my week away. I've always admired David Bowie and earlier this year saw the exhibition advertised when I was in the V&A. I had intended to go back to see it but just didn't find the time so this was the perfect post for me!
